Simply put, solar energy is a form of energy harnessed from the light and heat of the sun.
Solar panels are used to capture this energy and turn it into electricity, which can then run home appliances and lighting. As solar-panel technology has developed, rooftop panels are now more common as a cheaper and greener form of electricity.
What are the benefits of solar energy?
When you reach retirement, solar panels are probably not high on your list of priorities, but they’re well worth considering. Taking the time to make your expenditure more efficient can make your pension fund go much further in the long run.
Let’s take a look at a few of the ways that solar energy can help you and your household…
Cut your energy bills
Remember, sunlight is free. Once the installation of solar panels has been paid for, your electricity costs will be drastically reduced. After all, you’ll then use less from burning oil, gas and coal.
Surprised by this one? We’ll go into more detail on how you can actually earn money from solar energy later, but it’s a nice extra source of income for those who have retired.
Not only is solar energy free, but it’s also green and renewable. It doesn’t create any pollutants or harmful gases, so you’ll reduce your household’s carbon footprint along the way.
Solar panels are incredibly easy to maintain and only need cleaning once or twice a year.
Aside from the environmental benefits, the biggest advantage for you will be the savings you can make. When you’re retired, every penny counts for double. There are two main ways that you could earn money from your solar panel installations. Instead of just throwing money at energy suppliers, you can use energy smartly and save up more cash to spend on the things that really matter.
1. The ‘feed-in tariff’
The ‘feed-in tariff’ (FIT) is a government scheme. You can apply to receive payments from your energy supplier if you contribute to your own electricity generation. Technology such as wind turbines or solar panels qualify.
Revised rules came into play in February 2016. These mean that a lower amount is now paid out to you, but you will still receive 4.07p/kWh of what you generate, whether you use it or not.
2. The export tariff
As well as the above, there is also a scheme called the ‘export tariff’. This involves selling your unused units of electricity back to your supplier.
There’s a limit on the amount you can sell back – it’s currently limited to half of the units that you generate – and you’ll be paid 4.58p per unit.

How much do solar panels cost?
Whether you’ve been thinking about solar panels for a while, or if reading about the advantages here has convinced you, no doubt the burning question on your mind is “how much do solar panels cost?”.
Ultimately, the number of solar panels you need depends on the size of your home, but an average-sized house needs a 3kw system. The cost for this can range from £4000 to £7000.
While that may seem like a lot, bear in mind that the cost of solar panel installation has drastically reduced over the past few years. Given the rising cost of non-renewable energy and the potential earnings to be made from solar, many people consider them to be an investment. It’s certainly something for a retiree to consider.
